About EDPS
The European Data Protection Supervisor (EDPS) is the European Union’s independent data protection authority responsible for supervising the processing of personal data by the European institutions, bodies and agencies (EUIs).
The Supervisor, Wojciech Wiewiórowski, was appointed by a joint decision of the European Parliament and the Council on 6 December 2019 for a five-year term. The EDPS' Secretary General is Leonardo Cervera Navas.
EDPS' Tasks
- monitors the processing of personal data by EUIs to ensure that they comply with data protection rules;
- advises the European Commission, the European Parliament and the Council on legislative proposals and initiatives related to data protection;
- monitors and assesses technological developments impacting the protection of personal data;
- intervenes before the Court of Justice of the EU to provide expert advice in the field of data protection;
- works with supervisory authorities to promote consistent data protection across the EU, in particular through the works in the European Data Protection Board (EDPB);
- provides the secretariat for the EDPB.
Above all, however, the EDPS is the data protection authority located in the centre of European Union. We think there is a duty that comes with it - a call for seeking what is best for all EU citizens. With our Conference, we would like to contribute to the discussion on how to best safeguard the fundamental rights to privacy and to data protection. And then, to actually do it.
