Mathias Vermeulen

Mathias Vermeulen is the co-founder and director of AWO, a law firm and strategy consultancy that offers advice to NGOs, companies and governments on platform regulation, AI, data protection and other digital policy and data governance topics.

Earlier, he worked as a strategic advisor for the Mozilla Foundation, the global nonprofit behind the Firefox browser. He also worked for five years as a digital policy advisor in the European Parliament and four years as the main investigator for the UN Special Rapporteur on the Protection of Human Rights while Countering Terrorism.

Mathias is also a fellow at the Centre for Law, Science, Technology and Society at the Free University Brussels and has a PhD in European privacy law from that same university. His research and investigations have been featured in the New York Times, Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, Politico, Techcrunch and many others.
